Hyong & Poomsae

A form (hyong or poomsae) is a set sequence of between 20 and 70 attack and defence techniques.

FORMS

Forms practice is the absolute centerpiece of YU Taekwondo – far more than just a fixed choreography. It is a fight against imaginary opponents and the ultimate school of self-control.

Training content & progression

Muscle Memory

Forms are at the heart of YU Taekwondo: a battle against imaginary opponents that trains maximum self-control. With YU Taekwondo, you will master both traditional hyongs and Olympic poomsae (WT).

Body control

As our body control improves, we increase the level of difficulty. The aim is to perform clean high kicks, flips such as the flick-flack and free somersaults.

Focus (Jip-Jung)

You’ll learn to block out mental distractions and focus all your energy on the present moment.

Harmony (Chi)

According to Far Eastern philosophy, the fluid alternation between explosive tension and calm relaxation promotes the flow of life energy and effectively reduces stress.

The tradition of the Hyongs: The symbol of the 24 hours

Originally developed by Korean grandmasters, the classical system comprises 24 traditional hyongs (plus a 25th form added later).

Why 24, of all numbers? The number represents the 24 hours in a day. The deeper philosophy behind it reminds us of humility and constant growth: one should strive to learn throughout one’s entire life – yet, compared to the eternity of the universe, a human life is as fleeting as a single day.
