The three syllables βTaekwondoβ stand for foot techniques (Tae), hand techniques (Kwon) and the way of life (Do). Whilst individual techniques have been known for centuries, the Korean General Choi Hong-hi brought this knowledge together in 1955 and created a unified system. This marked the birth of Taekwondo. The key difference from other martial arts lies in its distinctive dynamism and the strong emphasis on foot techniques.
